St. Nicholas Boots?

In our family, we practice the tradition of setting out shoes on the evening of December 5th, in the hope that St. Nicholas will come overnight and leave candy or little goodies in the shoes. Directly after dinner tonight, the kids leapt up to put out their shoes. I was busy with a few other items and didn't oversee the process. Just a few moments ago I came upon this sight. Those are not shoes; those are boots. These are children hoping for the mother lode. We're still working on saintly moderation...

Monsignor Swain becomes Bishop Swain!

Our little Kathleen who made her First Holy Communion just last spring with then-Monsignor Swain is feeling mighty proud! She has already told us how "cool" it is to have made her First Communion with a man who was soon to be bishop -- the 8th Bishop of Sioux Falls, South Dakota! The URL above takes you to some of the awe-inspiring photos and sounds of that ordination day. We weren't there in person, but we watched every minute of it by live webcast. Madison and the Leones sure will miss Monsignor, I mean Bishop, Swain. Congratulations, Bishop Swain!

European Union Anthem in Latin!

My fellow homeschooling friend, Joan, alerted me to this. The European Union's proposed anthem is in Latin (sung to the tune of Beethoven's 9th Symphony or "Ode to Joy"). For those of you studying and teaching Latin, this makes for a fun translation exercise.
